L'Arroseur Arrosé

Tables Turned on the Gardener

Synopsis

A gardener waters his plants until the water suddenly stops to flow. As he turns his face at the nozzle to see what might be the cause of this, the water starts flowing again and hits him directly in the face. Recovering from the shock the gardener sees that a boy has stepped on the hose and starts chasing him until he catches him and administers a spanking. Then he returns to his work. The film was among the first ten films to be screened publicly by the Lumière brothers and is often said to be the first film that makes use of a narrative arc.
