L'Arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat

The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat Station

Synopsis

A shot of the platform of a trainstation in La Ciotat, France: People are waiting on the right side of the frame while the left shows us traintracks which lead away from us into the image's background which is dominated by the landscape surrounding the scene. As the one minute film progresses, the train slowly approaches the platform, comes to a halt and people leave the train before the ones waiting can start entering. The film has a legendary status in cinema's history because of a myth that describes its first public screening: Supposedly the spectators - not being familiar with cinema's moving images - mistook the train for a real one and fled the cinema out of fear of being run over.
